We are pleased to inform you that the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) has invited IIUM to participate in the upcoming Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) 2025, scheduled for May 2025. This prestigious event provides a platform to showcase the university’s innovative contributions in maritime, aerospace, defense, security, and safety.

We hope this message finds you well. We are writing to bring to your attention an important matter.

2. As you may already be aware, the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) has introduced the Malaysia Laboratories for Academia-Business Collaboration (MyLAB) program. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry in the commercialization of research products by providing pre-commercialization funds. The program is aligned with the growing demands for local technological advancements, innovation, and knowledge transfer. It is expected to drive the commercialization of research products and technologies, particularly in cutting-edge fields.

3. We would like to inform you that the MyLAB 1/2024 grant application opens on 19 August 2024, with the closing date set for 30 October 2024. The MyLAB Grant Guidelines (2024 Amendment) are attached for your reference and can also be downloaded from the Greater Malaysia Research Network System (MyGRANTS) at https://mygrants.gov.my/.

4. For your kind information, RMC will, accordingly conduct an initial screening and submit/recommend a maximum of three (3) potential project proposals to the MyLAB secretariat. These project proposals should be prepared using the 'project pitching' slide format as prescribed by JPT, KPT, as outlined in Appendix B. Please ensure that the slides are submitted to the RMC not later than Monday, 9 September 2024.  For any inquiries, please contact Br.Ami Nordin Bin Ismail at amiluq@iium.edu.my or 03-64215007/ 019-2736483.

5. Applications shortlisted after the 'project pitching' evaluation will need to submit a full proposal for the MyLAB grant. Five (5) printed copies of the completed MyLAB Grant Application Form must be submitted by 30 October 2024 through the Technology Transfer Office (TTO)/Research Management Center (RMC) or an equivalent office at your university. Additionally, a soft copy of the application and other relevant documents should be stored on a USB drive and sent to the MyLAB secretariat. The TTO/RMC/equivalent office should also verify and submit the complete application form, along with the MyLAB Grant Application Summary Form and the MyLAB Grant Application Document Delivery Checklist, to the following address:

PhDPreneur Program – Empowering PhD Graduates with Entrepreneurial Skill

We are excited to announce the launch of the PhDPreneur Program, an initiative designed to equip PhD graduates and final-year PhD candidates with essential skills in research commercialization and entrepreneurship. This program aims to enhance the commercialization rate of local research and development outputs by supporting participants in establishing technology-based startup companies.

 

Program Overview:
The PhDPreneur Program will select 25 participants through a rigorous screening process. These participants will undergo comprehensive training and receive guidance to form startup companies, with the goal of commercializing their PhD research findings. Each startup will be eligible for voucher assistance of up to RM500,000 to support technology scaling, commercial prototype development, technology and market validation, and industry collaboration and field testing.

 

Program Objectives:

  1. Increase the number of entrepreneurs among PhD graduates with commercialization skills and capabilities.
  2. Increase the number of technology-based startup companies.
  3. Empower PhD graduates to commercialize potential research outcomes.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Malaysian citizens aged 40 and below as of January 1, 2024.
  2. PhD graduates or final-year PhD candidates from local public or private universities.
  3. PhD graduates must be within two years of graduation. Those exceeding this period must provide proof of the continued relevance and high commercialization potential of their PhD projects.
  4. Not employed full-time during the program implementation.
  5. Have not previously received funding with similar scope or objectives.
  6. Projects must be at TRL 4-8.
  7. Projects or products must demonstrate good technological and market potential (evaluated by MTDC analysts).
  8. Must possess entrepreneurial attributes, potential, and interest.
  9. Must commit fully to the program (signing an offer letter with mandatory terms and conditions).

Program Phases:

  1. Phase I – Screening and Selection: Online applications followed by pitching sessions to a selection panel.
  2. Phase II – Commercialization Bootcamp: Intensive 5-day training on technology commercialization for the selected 25 participants.
  3. Phase III – Development of Value Proposition Canvas (VPC) and Business Model Canvas (BMC): Two-month period for developing VPC and BMC, with mentorship and coaching.
  4. Phase IV – Demo Day: Participants will pitch to a panel of investors and industry representatives. Ten participants will advance to the next phase.
  5. Phase V – Startup Company Formation: Guidance provided for establishing startup companies.
  6. Phase VI – Scale Up and Collaboration: Participants will engage in technology scaling and industry collaboration over a 12-month period.

We are pleased to announce that MOSTI is currently inviting researchers to submit applications for Applied Innovation Fund (AIF) via the SISTEM DANA BERSEPADU (SDB). 
 
OBJECTIVE
The AIF Fund Scheme aims to increase the participation of innovators in innovation activities and encourage technological innovation of products, processes, systems or services potential to be commercialized. The AIF Fund offers funding according to the Technology Readiness Level (TRL). 
 
TRL is a method to determine the maturity of a technology during a phase program acquisition developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as in Figure 1.

Project proposals under the AIF fund scheme must be between TRL 2- concept formulation up to the level of TRL 9- ready to be developed for commercial use. The details of TRL are in Appendix 1 in the guidelines.

Khazanah Impact Innovation Challenge (“KIIC”) 2023, themed “Tackling the Climate Challenge for Malaysia’s Food Security” is looking for Malaysian-based business entities with innovative and commercialised solutions which are economically viable and investible. We seek innovations both from a climate mitigation and adaptation perspective that address the adverse impacts of climate change to safeguard Malaysia’s food security and enable sustainable and resilient agrifood systems.

Please be informed that the Innovation and Commercialization Unit, Research Management Centre is inviting all researchers to submit your invention or innovation using the system i.e. https://rmsv2.iium.edu.my/auth/login, regardless of whether the inventions or innovation are the results from any registered or non-registered grants. It can also be inventions or innovations that you supervise your students too. 

The success of the application will contribute to IIUM MYRA marks and your personal KPIs. In order to get it filed in 2023, all researchers are encouraged to apply and submit your application latest by 30th November 2023.
