Recently, we hosted parallel research meetings between RUBIC members and researchers from UTM & USM at the RUBICLE lab.

Besides focusing on honey adulteration, the UTM research group, led by Prof. Dr. Fahrul Zaman and his collaborator, Dr. Mohd Hamzah, embarked on testing honey samples from Southeast Asia to explore their potential anti-diabetic effects. These honey samples will be tested using zebrafish models, and their bioactive compounds will be examined for molecular affinity toward the glucosidase enzyme. The team also received valuable guidance from Dr. Amir Husni, a retired UTM professor, on matters related to honey labeling and geographical origins. We wish them continued success on their research journey!

Dr. Tarmizi Che Has, a lecturer from Neuroscience USM Kubang Kerian, has returned to RUBICLE after years of completing his research attachment, this time for collaborative efforts. He has teamed up with Dr. Khairul Bariyyah to investigate how the GABA receptor binds with GABA and medicinal plant compounds, aiming to advance treatments for brain injuries. During the semester break, their final-year project students will be engaged in modeling these GABA receptors in RUBICLE. Let’s wish them success in their endeavors!

RUBIC is a research unit focusing on Bioinformatics and Computational biology techniques and integration of both experimental and theoretical studies, we also conduct and organize training, seminar, and meeting to share and disseminate knowledge transfer to the wider research community inside and outside IIUM. This will also become a platform to foster interactions and inter-department, inter-kulliyyah within IIUM as well as external research collaborations. This research group aims to emerge as a center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology that involves scientific research breakthroughs in line with IIUM vision and mission according to the national key priority area.
