The Institution's Research Fund awards grants every two years to support high quality research in structural engineering. They are looking for new, innovative projects or proposals to develop ongoing research. A portion of this research must be conducted within a university.

Eligibility
Collaborative research projects between industry and academia. Research conducted entirely in industry is ineligible.

Applications
- Either a university researcher or industrial partner may apply
- Your application form must be completed and signed by both an industry and academic partner
- Your application may be for work that forms part of a larger project. In this case your application must state exactly what part of the project the grant will fund
- Research can be conducted by an individual or group at any career stage.

Conditions of the grant
- Grants of £6,000
- The £6,000 grant will be paid in two installments: £5,000 upfront and £1,000 on delivery of a project summary.
- Funding can be split between the university and industrial partner, although it is more likely that the majority will go to the academic partner.

Since 2014, Coefficient has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in scientific research, supporting pioneering projects in computational protein design, malaria elimination, AI safety, and advanced approaches to preventing future pandemics. They believe there is a significant opportunity to advance fish welfare during slaughter. Each year, more than 100 billion farmed fish are slaughtered, yet only a small fraction—primarily salmon—are consistently rendered unconscious before slaughter through electrical or percussive stunning. Conditions are even more concerning for the over one trillion wild-caught fish, which are typically left to die from suffocation in air or in low-oxygen holding tanks, with few welfare safeguards in place.

Funding
$7,000,000 (Honorarium: Applicants whose submissions meet a minimum standard (or rank among the top 125, whichever comes first) will receive a $4,000 honorarium. (Honorarium payments are subject to eligibility under applicable law and completion of any required due diligence/compliance screening)

Area
The funder is looking for innovative technologies and prototypes that significantly improve fish welfare during capture and slaughter by ensuring fish become immediately unconscious, remain insensible until death, and that the process is reliable, measurable, and scalable.

Priority areas include:
  1. Practical solutions for use on fishing vessels with limited space and power.
  2. Methods suitable for large-scale capture of small wild fish.
  3. New approaches or improvements to existing electrical stunning systems used in aquaculture.
  4. Pre-slaughter interventions that enhance fish welfare, even if they do not involve stunning, provided they have the potential to benefit hundreds of millions of fish.
How to Apply

image.png

Applications will remain open until July 1, 2026. The first step is to submit a 2,500–3,000 word Letter of Intent (LOI). Submit your application HERE

LOI should cover:
  1. An overview of your approach to the problem
  2. Research/project plans
  3. Organizational structure
  4. Timeline
  5. Budget
