Malaysian Code of Practice for Care of Animal for Scientific Purposes <\/h2>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

The Malaysian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (MYCODE) have been drawn up after a review of the principles and practices adopted by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), and references\n from countries such as Australia, Singapore and the United States of America. IIUM-IACUC adhere to this code of practice.<\/span>\n

\n Section 26 of Animal Welfare Act 2015 (Act 772)<\/u>\n <\/p>\n

Animals used in research, testing or teaching<\/p>\n

(1) No person shall use animals in research, testing or teaching unless\u2014<\/p>\n

(a) all reasonable steps are taken to ensure that the physical,health, and behavioral needs of those animals are inaccordance with this Act and the subsidiary legislation as may be prescribed by the Minister;<\/p>\n

(b) the animals shall receive, where practicable, treatment that alleviates any unreasonable or unnecessary pain or distress when the animals are ill or injured; or<\/p>\n

(c) any degree of pain or distress is reduced to the minimum possible in the circumstances where the nature of the research, testing, or teaching cannot comply with paragraph (a) or (b).<\/p>\n

SECTION I<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n GENERAL PRINCIPLES FOR THE CARE AND USE OF ANIMALS FOR SCIENTIFIC PURPOSES<\/u>\n <\/p>\n

The Policy emphasises the responsibilities of all those involved in the care and use of animals. This embraces a duty of care that demands a genuine commitment to the welfare of the animals, a respect for the contribution the animals\n make to research and teaching and a desire to promote the animals\u2019 wellbeing.<\/p>\n

Encapsulated in the Policy is the need in scientific and teaching activities to consider 3Rs:<\/p>\n

\u2022 the Replacement of animals with other methods;<\/p>\n

\u2022 the Reduction in the number of animals used; and<\/p>\n

\u2022 the Refinement of techniques used to reduce the adverse impact on animals.<\/p>\n
